Written by: Daniel Cortés Martínez Photo by Angel Santiago Footballpromx Raptors 14-10 Fundidores The second game of the day at "Palillo" stadium brought together a pair of fresh teams to close the activities of Week 5 in LFA. This time, the show was in charge of the Raptors and the Monterrey Fundidores. The last time these teams met, the Fundidores won by one point and the Raptors were looking forward to take revenge in this match. The first productive series came from the Fundidores side commanded by N. 12, Roberto Vega, who marched down the field with poise and making connections with WR Luis de la Torre, N. 14,mixing well with short runs by Alberto Espinosa, N. 33. The Raptors defense looked lost and committed key penalties  –  offside and pass interference  –  that allowed the Fundidores to continue with the possession of the ball. On 2nd opportunity, Vega released the ball and, with a spectacular one-hand catch, Marcos Treviño, N. 84, opened the score for the

Mayas Survive a Furious Eagles Comeback and Reclaim Their Victory in Epic Fashion

Eagles 24-27 Mayas It was a great day for a football game. The tone was set in the "Palillo" stadium to continue the activities for week 5 of the LFA Football tournament. The actors were more than ready. Eagles and Mayas knew perfectly what was at stake  – w in and take the leadership of the Suerox Division , or go home thinking about your damaged aspirations for the playoff dream. The first quarter opened hostilities with the Eagles choosing to receive the football immediately. A not so wise decision, given that Vladimir Araiza, N. 33, muffed the kickoff and left the Mayas team in their own 1-yard-line mark. Raúl Mateos, N.18, started as QB and began making plays with his legs, giving the Eagles room to breathe and operate their first offensive series. Then, Mateos made the first connection with Araiza, N. 33, to grant a first down and keeping their attack close to midfield. A couple of creative option plays showed the versatility of Mateos work, who pu

Condors vs Dinos LFA Week 5

Condors 10-23 Dinos In week 5 LFA, 4 teams had their rest by week. Only Condors were visiting Saltillo Dinos. The first quarter ended 10-3 winning the local team in Saltillo, Coahuila, northern Mexico. It started with a good field position with Donell Alexander, N. 8, and continued with a good drive by Condors  –  leaded by QB Castañeda – scoring the first points of the game for the Condors with a FG. But the Dinos made a good drive, and scored a TD. The game was 7-3. After that, Dinos scored another TD. Dinos had a conservative game. They did their job in offense, defense, and special teams. Miguel Angel Chen was QB. They were able to move the chains, keep the offense moving and, in the field, they stablished a good running game, openning the field for the passing game. The most important for Dinos was to get their second win of the season. On the other hand, Condors offense was explosive and they scored a TD in a 1st down with a hitch pass to Nestor Mosqueda, N. 21. The QB Ca

A New Hope for Condors. Fundidores Fall Again

Condors 14-12 Fundidores The prime time Mexican football game was between the Fundidores, from Monterrey, visiting the Condors in Mexico City. It was a difficult defensive game for both teams that were looking for their second win in the season. Now 1-3 for Fundidores it would be difficult to overcome.  The Condors started with QB Arturo Sánchez and had complications in the passing game. But in one 3down and 1 yard to go, Sánchez threw a deep ball and was intercepted. Then, there was a QB change for Salvador Castañeda. Some of their QR had important receptions like Mosqueda, N. 21, and Luis Hernandez, N. 17. But at the end of the first half, they were 6-7. At the end of the game, Condors were able to run the ball and score a TD to score 14 points.  Photo by www.lfa.mx  On the other hand, the Fundidores had a strong offensive line and a good QB, Gustavo Vega, but they were unable to score points with their offense, even though they were taking advantage of Condors s

Mayas vs Raptors: A Thrilling Game

Mayas 34-31 Raptors Since the preparation for the week, it seemed that this would be a great game. There is a great rivalry betweeen the Mayas and the Raptors since their last game. They are the teams that played the championship game in LFA first final, "Mexico Bowl". The victory was for the Mayas. This game was really promising, and it did not dissapoint. It was a back and forth game. Great plays and offense looked strong with both teams. Both QB Bruno Marquez, and QB Marco García showed a great performance. First of all, Mayas showed, as in every game, a tremendous offense. Big plays by QB, who had a good passing game, and also they opened their field with the RB Omar Cojolum and Edgar Arroyo, N. 33, who had great ball returns as a fielder. The running game was really important to open the passing game, even without their main WR, Aaron Wiliams that was out of the game due to an injury. They  looked as really strong teams, except for their Field Goal kicker, who misse

Mayas, Best Offense in LFA?

Mayas 30-12 Dinos Mayas looked strong in both sides of the ball last Sunday hosting the Dinos. The passing  and the running game was strong with RB Coholum, and besides the Dinos defense, the Mayas were able to stop Aaron Wiliams receptions, who had more weapons to tackle. In the first half, the match was 20-0 against the Dinos, who suffered several injuries. The Dinos tried to start a difficult comeback, the defense scored two safeties, but the Mayas defense neutralized the Dinos offense. A final forced fumble by Mayas defense avoided all the attempts for a comeback. Mayas took the day. In the press conference, coach Alfaro and players  –  QB, RB, and WR  –  seemed confident. They answered specific questions about the next game against the Raptors; and about the complication of Dinos defense. But they were happy and looked like they really enjoyed the game. Although they lost their first game against the Eagles, they recovered, and in week 2 scored 66 points, this time just 30.

Condors Recovers and Looks Strong in the Passing Game

Condors 16-64 Mayas Condors recovers from two lost games in a row  –  one by a shameful difference 66-16. Mayas made look terrible Condors defensive backs. Condors 24-20 Eagles But in week 3 of LFA, mexican football league, Condors recovered. They could defeat the Eagles, who were 2-0 and growing fast. During the first half, Condors had problems with stopping Eagles offense, which had a QB change from Raul Mateos to Joaquin Juárez, a new starter. Raul Mateos was playing other positions like WR or even defensive back. We do not understand the reason of this decision. In the first half, it looked like the Condors were going to lose again, because they dealed with 2 problems during this week  –  they could not stop the passing game; they missed tackles and important defensive plays. However, the Condors managed to stablish an offense, based in their excelent passing game from QB Castañeda to their WR, including american Donell Alexander, who had their first TD in Mexico. Castañeda

Besides Two FGs Missed, and Two Turnovers, Fundidores Takes the Day

Fundidores 22-21 Raptors Fundidores looked like a strong team in offense and deffense. They hade a great QB with a strong and precise arm, and a good WR and offensive line. It was hard to realize that they were 0-2. Among Fundidores players, they have mythic Sergio Cantú, defensive back famous for intercepting Carolina Panther QB, Cam Newton, in a college football pre-season game. The game Raptors vs Fundidores was a life or death matchup for local Fundidores. If they had lost the game, they were going to be eliminated from playoffs. But they handled to have a good enough game in order to win the match. The first TD scored by a +50-yard pass to WR N. 14, Luis de la Torre. It was an amazing play. Also, they had a strong passing game with other WRs like N. 84, Marcos Treviño, and N. 6, Rolando Medina, who were really important for the Fundidores passing game. They were able to run yards after the catch and they created separation from the defensive backs. The running game was als

Mayas 30-12 Dinos Mayas showed a tremendous offense hosting the Saltillo Dinos on LFA Week 3, at the"Palillo" Martinez Stadium, in Mexico City. The Mayas offense started strong since the fist quarter, with a strong system and a good balance of plays. With the RB Cojolum, N. 1, and WR Aaron Wiliams and Josué Martínez. Also, Mayas' defense could stop Dinos' offense, who came from week 2 blowing a 20-point lead against the Raptors. The offensive leaded by Miguel Ángel Chen could not find the way to open the field, and find the receivers in order to stablish a running game. After the game, coach Guillermo, from Dinos team, explained the problems they had with injuries related to Dinos WR. Photo by lfa.  http://lfa.mx/2017/03/mayas-continua-su-marca-de-victorias-y-dinos-vuelve-a-caer/ The game was 20-0 at the end of the second quarter. At the beggining of the second quarter, the Dinos found their way to put points in the score with safety. After that, they made Q

Make Football Great Again (In Mexico)

Once, in Mexico,  football was one of the first sports preferred by mexicans along with baseball. College football was really popular and was the first sport, holding at least 68,954 spectators in the Olympic stadium in Mexico city. It was trasmited in radio and TV. Out of that, classic movies were filmed; for example 1956 “Viva la juventud;“ “Sin temores ni rencores todos juntos vencerán;” “Con la frente muy en alto Poli y la Universidad;” “No Fear No Regrets Everyone Will Win;” and a "Young Cheerleader Lady Sings."   So, what happened? Why this decay? How soccer became the favorite sport? We suggested in an older post, following the argument of Powell of Bletcher Report, that the decay of football, and maybe baseball, in Mexico had political reasons related to univertsities. The idea was to create a context of violence in the stadiums, because College football created unity among students like that woman singing in the movie “Todos juntos vencerán”. I explained in
